Gusinsky Sues NTV for $4.5M

Vladimir Gusinsky has filed a 130 million-ruble ($4.5 million) lawsuit against NTV to recoup a debt the television station owes its former parent company Media-MOST.

Gazprom-Media, which now controls NTV, said a city court has frozen NTV's accounts at Alfa Bank and Bank Austria Creditanstalt while it reviews the lawsuit, a move it said could shut down NTV, RIA Novestei reported.

But NTV spokesman Oleg Sapozhnikov said the bank accounts have not been frozen. "We are taking a calm look at this," Sapozhnikov said. "Even if the accounts are frozen, it will not affect the work of NTV."

Sapozhnikov said NTV plans to challenge the debt as artificial, saying it came from money NTV had received from Media-MOST that was then transferred to other Media-MOST companies.

Media-MOST spokesman Dmitry Ostalsky said the accounts would be frozen. "We are talking about calling real debts and we are naturally doing it after NTV was forcibly taken over by Gazprom," he said. "Gazprom is not the one to be donning a martyr's hairshirt."
