German Chef Killed in Attack

A German national who worked as a chef at the Sheraton Palace Hotel was killed Saturday in an apparent robbery, police said Sunday.

Helmut Kurth, 40, was found Saturday morning at 37 Bolshoi Tishinsky Pereulok and taken to the Botkin hospital's foreigners' ward, police said. He died at 10 a.m. while being treated for massive head injuries.

The Moscow rescue service received a telephone call at 4:42 a.m. Saturday from a male witness who said he had seen a man sitting on a curb and his "face was very severely torn," according to a rescue service report.

Doctors at the Botkin hospital found Kurth was suffering from brain trauma and had numerous bruises and wounds to the head, Interfax said.

Police have started a criminal investigation.

Kurth's associates at the Sheraton, where he had worked for more than a year, said they were saddened by his death. "He was a wonderful man and did a lot for the hotel," said a hotel manager.
