Pager Operators Take to Finding Stolen Cars

With the help of your pager you can locate a stolen vehicle or activate the boiler at your dacha.

The new services come as falling demand has forced pager operators to seek out new means of using their infrastructure.

Avtolokator, the first service of its kind on the market, uses a dual paging system to determine the route of a stolen car. The service even stops the car using special sensors to turn off the car's fuel supply, said Lilya Ryabchuk, the commercial director of Informekskom, which offers the service along with Mega-Page.

"A private security service, Mega-Romb, has been created for this purpose," said Informekskom manager Stanislav Shirokov. The service will monitor stolen vehicles and shut them down in an appropriate place.

The location of the vehicle is determined by the paging service's base station antenna. A subscriber with Avtolokator can follow the progress himself via the Internet. And for $1,000 a jealous subscriber can follow the movements of his or her spouse.

"The demand for these systems will be high, it will confuse criminal elements, meaning we will be able to catch even more of them," said the head of one of Moscow's traffic police departments.
