Syrian Foreign Minister to Visit Moscow

DAMASCUS, Syria - Syria's Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa will arrive in Moscow Monday with a letter for Russian President Vladimir Putin from his Syrian counterpart, Bashar Assad, the official Syrian Arab News Agency reported.

SANA did not disclose the content of the letter. It said al-Sharaa would meet during his two-day visit with Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and other high-ranking officials to discuss bilateral and "regional and international developments."

Russia has voiced interest in recovering its past influence in the Middle East and assuming a more active role in the Israeli-Arab peace process.

The Soviet Union was Syria's main arms supplier and restocked the Syrian arsenals after the 1967 and 1973 Mideast wars. However, Damascus defaulted on its debts for previous arms deliveries and the post-Soviet Russian government has been more hesitant to replace the aging weapons of the Syrian forces.
