Dynamo Picks Novikov

Former Soviet defender Alexander Novikov has been appointed interim coach of Dynamo Moscow, club officials said Tuesday.

Novikov, 45, who played for Dynamo for 13 years from 1975 to 1988, succeeded Valery Gazzayev, who resigned just four weeks into the season last Saturday.

Novikov, who is still the club's all-time leader in games played, ahead of the great Soviet goalkeeper Lev Yashin, was Gazzayev's assistant at Dynamo.

Gazzayev, 46, announced his resignation following a 2-1 defeat by city rival Lokomotiv, Dynamo's third defeat in five league matches.
