Yeltsin Released From Hospital

Former President Boris Yeltsin has left the hospital where he had spent more than a month with an acute viral infection, a source in the presidential medical center said Sunday.

Yeltsin has a record of health problems and his latest long spell in the elite Central Clinical Hospital triggered rumors about a new deterioration of health.

"Yeltsin is in his Gorki residence," the source said, referring to the house outside Moscow where Yeltsin has spent much of his time since he resigned Dec. 31, 1999.

"One cannot say his health is perfect, but the latest episode is over," the source said without giving any further details.

Yeltsin was hospitalized on the eve of his 70th birthday with what aides said was the flu. Doctors later said the illness was complicated by pneumonia, but that he had almost recovered and would be home after the weekend.

News agencies said Yeltsin left the hospital earlier Sunday.
