Russian Airline Hijacked After Leaving Istanbul

ISTANBUL, Turkey - A Russian passenger airplane bound for Moscow was hijacked after leaving Istanbul Thursday and was headed for Cairo, Anatolian news agency and Turkish television stations said.

Airport officials confirmed there had been a hijack and said radio conversations overheard indicated the hijackers might be of Chechen origin. They could give no further details.

Anatolian agency said the airline had 162 passengers on board when it was hijacked. It said the flight left Istanbul at 1:30 pm. It also said there were two hijackers on board the plane.
