Putin Visits Yeltsin After Release From Hospital

President Vladimir Putin visited his ailing predecessor Boris Yeltsin in his country home outside Moscow Monday, a day after he was released from the hospital.

Yeltsin was hospitalized in late January just before his 70th birthday and treated for pneumonia. His release was repeatedly delayed, prompting speculation that his condition had turned sharply for the worse.

Yeltsin was sent home Sunday, and Russia's private NTV television showed footage Monday of him smiling and resting in an armchair in his residence west of Moscow.

Putin paid a visit Monday before meeting in the Kremlin with visiting Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, the president's press service said.

Yeltsin was repeatedly ill and away from the Kremlin for weeks at a time during his second term in office. He has lived in seclusion since he abruptly resigned Dec. 31, 1999, six months before the end of his term, and turned power over to then-Prime Minister Putin. Putin easily won early elections three months later.
