Putin Names New Advisory Presidium

President Vladimir Putin has appointed a new presidium for an advisory council of governors, replacing prominent leaders who had held the jobs with lesser-known figures, Interfax reported.

The new presidium comprises the governor of the Jewish autonomous district Nikolai Volkov; head of the northwestern district of Karelia Sergei Katanandov; leader of the southern region of Kabardino-Balkaria Valery Kokov; Yaroslavl Governor Anatoly Lisitsyn; Omsk Governor Leonid Polezhayev; Bashkortostan leader Murtaza Rakhimov; and Khanty-Mansiisk leader Alexander Filipenko, Interfax quoted presidential spokesman Alexei Gromov as saying.

Initially, Putin asked prominent governors — including Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov, St. Petersburg Governor Vladimir Yakovlev and Tatarstan President Mintimer Shaimiyev — to form the new group's presidium.

But presidium membership was to change on a rotating basis, so Putin picked replacements, Gromov said.
