Norilsk Blast Did Not Halt Output

An explosion at Norilsk Nickel's Zapolyarny mine which killed two workers early Thursday did not affect production, a Norilsk spokesman told Reuters.

"The plant did not stop working," he said.

The Zapolyarny mine, which is near the town of Norilsk in the Arctic circle, produces ore from which copper, nickel, platinum and palladium can be extracted.

The spokesman said Zapolyarny is one of Norilsk's major ore deposits.

Norilsk produces 70 percent of the world's palladium and around 30 percent of its platinum.
