New Pipeline to Open in Rostov

ROSTOV-ON-DON, Southern Russia — Russia is on track to increase its oil export options by the end of the year with the opening of two new routes in the Rostov region and Primorsk, officials said at the weekend.

Both the Sukhodolny-Rodionovsky pipeline in the Rostov region and the Baltic Pipeline System (BPS) on the Gulf of Finland will be pumping oil by the end of the year, Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Khristenko said during a tour of the sites.

"We can be sure that things will be working by the end of 2001," Khristenko said at separate briefings attended by Semyon Vainshtok, head of the Transneft pipeline monopoly, local contractors and officials.

Sukhodolny-Rodionovsky is a 259-kilometer pipeline crossing the southern Rostov region that will remove the need to use a 100 kilometer stretch of line in Ukraine, for which the country charges high transport fees.

Khristenko said financing for both projects was in place, but gave no concrete details.
