Lyon Out After 1-1 Draw in Moscow

Spartak Moscow held Olympique Lyon 1-1 at home in its final Champions League group C match on Wednesday to eliminate the French side from the quarterfinals.

The result sent Bayern Munich and Arsenal into the last eight.

Lyon had to win to progress because even though Arsenal lost against Bayern the French side had a worse head-to-head record against the English club.

Spartak, bottom of the group with three points from five games, was already out.

Dmitry Parfyonov put Spartak ahead when he converted a fourth minute penalty after Brazilian defender Edmilson tripped Viktor Bulatov from behind inside the box. Lyon captain Sonny Anderson, who had the best chance for the visitors in the 25th minute when he went one-on-one with Spartak goalkeeper Alexander Filimonov, equalized from the spot in the 68th minute after he was brought down by Filimonov.
