Iranian President Begins Visit to Russia

Iranian President Mohammad Khatami arrived in Moscow Monday for the first visit by a Tehran leader in nearly 40 years, Interfax said.

It said Khatami was met at the airport by Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov who is in charge of Russia's military-industrial complex.

His four-day visit, likely to focus on efforts to expand trade and technical cooperation, developing central Asian oil reserves and nuclear power.

The United States suspect Russia of helping Iran, which it lists among "rogue states", to develop military nuclear technologies. Russia and Iran deny the charges and say their cooperation is limited to building a nuclear power station.

Russian officials have said that talks on arms trade were formally excluded from the agenda of the Khatami's visit, though they say Russia hopes to sell new arms to Iran or help in upgrading Tehran's weapons purchased from the Soviet Union.

Khatami is also due to meet President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov and Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov Monday. He would also visit Russia's second city of St Petersburg and the Volga River region of Tatarstan, which has a large Muslim population.
