Guards Kill 10 Drug Smugglers in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan - Russian borderguards in Tajikistan have killed 10 drug smugglers who tried to cross the border from Afghanistan, the guards' press service said on Wednesday.

It said the smugglers opened fire after being challenged late Monday by the guards, who patrol the Tajik-Afghan frontier under an intergovernment agreement. All were killed in the shootout, the latest in a long series of such incidents.

The press office said the guards had seized 180 kg of heroin and fire arms.

Afghanistan is one of the world's leading drug producers, with shipments streaming into Russia and on to Europe across vast and sparesely populated ex-Soviet Central Asia.
