China and Russia to Sign Friendship Treaty

BEIJING, China - Chinese President Jiang Zemin will sign a friendship treaty with Russia during a visit to Moscow in July, Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said Tuesday.

Tang stressed the treaty would not be a formal alliance like one that once existed between China and the former Soviet Union.

Nevertheless, the signing of the so-called Good Neighbourly Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation will underline a growing warmth between the giant neighbours based partly on mutual suspicion and resentment of U.S. power.

"It is not an alliance nor targetted at any third country," Tang told a news conference during the annual two-week session of the National People's Congress, China's parliament.

"It is just a normal country-to-country relationship," he said.

Tang said he would initial the agreement on a trip to Moscow ahead of Jiang's visit to Russia, which has become the leading foreign supplier of military equipment to China.
