Border Guards in Tajikistan Seize 180 Kilograms of Heroin

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan - Russian border guards seized 180 kilograms of heroin from drug traffickers crossing into Tajikistan from Afghanistan, a border guards spokesman said Wednesday.

The guards spotted the smugglers floating across the Pyandzh River using tire inner tubes Tuesday and attempted to arrest them when they reached the Tajik side. Gunfire broke out and the smugglers fled, leaving behind the drugs and two automatic rifles.

Russia keeps troops in Tajikistan to help guard the border with Afghanistan, a major source of drugs headed for other Central Asian countries, Russia and Europe.
