Surgeon Flees For British Exile

LONDON — A Ukrainian doctor involved in investigating the controversial disappearance of journalist Georgy Gongadze has fled Ukraine and is staying in Britain, a source close to the case said Tuesday.

Surgeon Valery Ivasiuk came to Britain last month, the source said, adding: "He is staying somewhere in the U.K."

Britain’s Independent newspaper said Ivasiuk was seeking political asylum in Britain after receiving death threats in Ukraine for his involvement in the investigation. A spokeswoman for Britain’s Home Office said she could not comment on whether Ivasiuk was in Britain.

"We cannot discuss any individual cases," she said.

The Independent said Ivasiuk had been threatened after calling news conferences in Ukraine to rebut claims by the prosecutor general that DNA tests on a body believed to be Gongadze’s were inconclusive. The tests indicated with 99.6 percent certainty that the body was Gongadze’s.
