Grozny Bus Hits Mine, 10 Injured

A passenger bus struck a land mine hidden in a street in Grozny on Monday, and about 10 people were injured, said a deputy to the Kremlin’s spokesman on Chechnya, Sergei Yastrzhembsky.

The deputy, Pavel Kudryavtsev, provided no details of the incident, but said rebels were likely to blame.

The bus was traveling from the village of Chechen-Aul to Grozny, Interfax reported. Six passengers were rushed to a hospital for treatment and some were seriously hurt, the report said.

Also Monday, police said a large bomb packed with nails was discovered outside the house of a world wrestling champion in Dagestan, a region bordering Chechnya.

The device was in the trunk of a car near the home of Sagid Murtazaliyev in the town of Kizlyar, a spokesman for the regional Interior Ministry said.

It was not immediately clear whether Murtazaliyev was the intended victim.

He won the 1999 World Freestyle Wrestling Championships in the 97-kilogram group.
