FotoSite Unmasks a Wealth of Internet Art

From time to time, a web site appears that finds a way of effectively combining the technical capabilities of the Internet with a very good idea.

Russian-language FotoSite ( is an evolution in the concept of online art and a deserving nominee in this year’s Intel Russian Internet awards in the discovery of the year category.

The management of the site makes it clear that it is neither a dumping ground for family snapshots nor a repository of online pornography. They want to display genuine art that has clearly involved a lot of effort to create.

Submitting artists are encouraged to provide contact information, the address of their personal homepage if they have one and information about the equipment or techniques used in each particular artwork’s creation.

FotoSite's visitors are able to leave a comment with any given piece of art, which is automatically e-mailed to the submitting artist and added to a list below each photo. The owners of FotoSite stipulate that they want polite and constructive comment; rude critique is unwelcome and will be removed.

Registration is not compulsory; anyone can view listed artwork, make comments and even cast votes in their rating system. But if you wish to make submissions, the registration process is free and easy to complete.

FotoSite has an online rating system that allows visitors to cast votes for each piece of art. The photos that receive the most votes are eligible for inclusion in featured sections such as "Top 200," "Best of the Week" or "Golden Authors."

FotoSite includes several forums, including an online chat area where users can find out how to prepare and improve submitted work.

Although it doesn’t quite have the atmosphere of the Louvre, FotoSite is certainly a lot easier to get to. FotoSite
