Flu Epidemic Hits Ukraine

KIEV, Ukraine - A flu epidemic has struck at least five Ukrainian regions and is expected to spread into three more, news reports said Thursday.

Health officials say levels of infection constitute an epidemic in the Mykolaiv, Rivne, Lviv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, as well as on the Crimea Peninsula, according to television reports.

The capital Kiev, where about 50,000 people fell ill with flu over the past two weeks, is expected to reach the epidemic level over the weekend, the reports said.

Schools and kindergartens in regions where an epidemic has been declared are closed until at least Feb. 10.
