Dubai Court Orders Russian MP to Pay Blood Money

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - A Dubai court has ordered a Russian member of parliament to pay 75,000 dirhams ($20,420) in blood money to the family of a woman he ran down and killed, newspapers reported Tuesday.

They said Alexander Popov, 53, was also fined 11,000 dirhams by the Dubai Court of First Instance for "unintentionally causing death, damaging property and driving without a valid United Arab Emirates license".

The senator had been on a private visit to Dubai, one of the seven emirates that make up the UAE, Jan. 15 when his car struck a 24-year-old Vietnamese woman as she crossed the road.

The paper said the court had halved the blood money usually paid in such cases because police reports showed the victim had crossed the road in an undesignated area.
