8 People Freeze to Death in Moscow

Eight people died of exposure in the Russian capital last week, bringing the winter death toll to 179, a city health official said Monday.

Vsevolod Alexeyev of the Moscow medical directorate said eight people died of the cold from Feb. 19-25. City hospitals treated 88 people for hypothermia, 50 for frostbite and one for injuries caused by a falling icicle.

Officials say most cold-related deaths occur among the homeless or alcoholics.
