Rebels: Boryayev Has Been Executed

Chechen rebels said Tuesday that they had executed Lieutenant Colonel Sergei Boryayev, a Russian army officer they were holding hostage. The claims could not be independently confirmed.

"Add this one to the other nine," rebel warlord Khattab said on the rebels' web site Kavkaz.org, referring to nine officers of the Perm OMON captured and executed by the rebels in spring 2000. The officers were killed after Russian authorities refused to swap them for Colonel Yury Budanov, currently on trial for killing a young Chechen woman. Two further Perm officers were killed by the rebels before the exchange offer was made.

Khattab had earlier threatened to execute Boryayev on Sunday if Russian troops did not hand over 25 captured Chechen civilians in exchange.

The Defense Ministry on Tuesday could not confirm Boryayev's death.

Search groups for Boryayev will continue their operations in Chechnya until Boryayev is found, a ministry spokesman said.
