Corporate Computer Sales Surge

Russian computer makers have reported explosive growth in sales on the corporate market in the year to October, but retail sales have stagnated.

Leaders in the corporate computer market -- Aquarius, Kraftway, RSI, Inel and Compulink -- saw 6 percent to 7 percent growth in sales in the second and third quarters, according to the SK Press research company.

Growth on the entire market, however, was very weak -- 0.5 percent to 1 percent per month.

Foreign firms, however, are not doing as well in the corporate sector. Compaq, whose sales in Russia are 95 percent corporate, said sales for the past nine months have remained level.

"We don't expect any drastic changes in the economy's performance, so there is no reason to expect a strong change in sales," said Svyatoslav Sorokin, marketing manager at Compaq.

According to the IDC research company, foreign companies have trouble in the corporate sector because they need permission from various government agencies to participate in tenders.
