The Soothsayer

What is happening? Disastrous, that's the only word for last week's results. On the other hand if anybody backed against my European tips last week then they must be rubbing their hands with glee -- the astronomical odds would have picked up winnings of $1,650.

NFL week 6: Green Bay, Baltimore, Indianapolis all soundly beaten, and then Washington wins!

Back to reality, my kitty now stands at $45, and I'm expecting my luck to change after consulting my astrologer, the tooth fairy, the local Liverpool supporter and a wise gypsy woman at Gorky Park.

The Yankees are now down to (1.75 - 3/4) for the World Series, following their 4-1 win against the Mariners. Two weeks ago in my first column I said (5.00 - 4/1) was great value.

Also in the first edition of The Soothsayer I highlighted the value on the NY Islanders at (41.00 - 40/1) to win the NHL Eastern Conference; they are now (12.00 - 11/1) after a great start.

Manchester United (2.00 - Evens) to win at home. Even though Manchester United has lost two of its last three home games I believe -- and so does the local Liverpool supporter and the wise gypsy -- it can dispose of Leeds on Saturday in the same manner as it did Olympiakos on Wednesday.

Spartak (1.80 - 4/5) to win at home. Spartak only needs a draw from Saturday's match against second-placed Zenit to win the championship, but I think the Muscovites will go out as true champions, winning in front of their home crowd.

Dynamo (3.15 - 9/4) to draw at home. Dynamo is at home to CSKA on Saturday in a Moscow derby, neither team has anything to play for in this end of season scrap except pride, and I see it as a draw.

Livingston (3.50 - 5/2) to draw at home. Livingston, the new boys in Scotland, are at the heady heights of third place in the Premier League and have an intriguing game against Rangers, the giants of Scottish football, on Saturday. I'm going for a draw in this one, but if anyone fancies an outsider, go for the correct score 0-0 at (7.00 - 6/1).

Juventus (2.10 - 11/10) to win at home. I can see Juventus ending its dismal league run of three draws and one defeat in its last four matches with a win against Inter on Saturday, which itself lost its unbeaten home record and the leadership last week to deadly rival AC.

United States

Arizona (-1) to win at Dallas. Arizona has a great chance of beating Dallas after a good win against Kansas City last week. Galloway is doubtful for the Cowboys, and anyone who saw the Dallas (9) vs. Washington (7) game, the worst Monday night game in history, can have no illusions about the outcome of this one.

San Diego (-8) to win at home Buffalo. Flutie may be small but he rarely gives the ball away, and with a large slice of playtime granted by an inefficient Buffalo offense he should dominate.

Pittsburgh (-3) to win at home to Tennessee. Although Tennessee has shown signs of improvement, the Steelers defense at home should give them the decisive edge for a win.
