Tajik Guards Clash On Afghan Border

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan - Tajik troops fired on an armed group trying to slip across the border from Afghanistan, prompting a gunfight that left one trespasser dead and one guard wounded, officials said Monday.

The group approached the Kalaiikhum section of the mountainous border between the Central Asian nations Sunday, said Anoyatbek Sulaimonbekov, deputy chairman of the Tajik border force.

One of the trespassers was killed and the others escaped back into Afghan territory, he said. One Tajik soldier was wounded by gunfire.

Border officials said the group was likely trying to smuggle drugs, an extremely common occurrence on the Tajik-Afghan border, though no contraband was found.

The Tajik border troops are joined by thousands of Russian border guards deployed to protect impoverished, volatile Tajikistan's border with Afghanistan from incursions by drug and weapon smugglers and Islamic militants.
