Russian Sailor Quits

A Russian adventurer has dropped out of a solo round-the-world yacht race, citing illness and a malfunction that has left his ship drifting in the Indian Ocean, media reported Wednesday.

ORT state television quoted Fyodor Konyukhov’s son Oscar as saying his father had decided to step out of the Vendee Globe race. He was heading for Australia, but his exact location was not known.

Earlier Wednesday, Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu said he would dispatch a rescue crew to pick up Konyukhov, along with the Australian coast guard, if his health were to worsen.

Konyukhov, 50, has been suffering kidney problems, according to media reports. He has lost control over the yacht because of a malfunction that would take at least three weeks to repair, knocking him out of the race, Oscar Konyukhov was quoted as saying by ORT television.
