Moderate quake shakes Central Asia

DUSHANBE Tajikistan - A moderate earthquake shook parts of Central Asia Thursday, with an epicenter inside Afghanistan, emergency officials in Tajikistan said.

The magnitude 5 quake had an epicenter about 220 kilometers southwest of Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, according to the Tajik Ministry of Emergency Situations. Buildings in Dushanbe swayed for about five minutes when the temblor struck at 1:42 local time.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or property damage, although a magnitude 5 earthquake is capable of causing moderate damage. Central Asia is a seismically active region, and strong jolts are not unusual.
