Killers of Family Get Death Penalty in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan - The Supreme Court of Tajikistan on Friday sentenced three men to death for the brutal killing of a family of 11 in the capital Dushanbe in July.

The attackers burst into the family home and used automatic rifles to shoot several adults and then used knives to kill the other family members, including a pregnant woman, children and an infant. The court found that robbery was the motive.

Maksatullo Abdulkhakov, Azam Kurbanov, and Faizullo Gulyamov were sentenced to death, while Bakhreddin Abdulkhakov received a jail sentence of 25 years. A fifth member of the group is still at large and is being hunted by police.

Shootings, bombings and robbery occur frequently in Tajikistan, a poor former Soviet republic in Central Asia which has been rocked by civil war and frequent outbursts of political unrest since it became independent in 1991.
