Ivanov to Meet Powell Soon

Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov will meet new U.S. secretary of state Colin Powell "in the near future", the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

The ministry said in a statement that the two men had spoken on the telephone and agreed a meeting "to exchange views on all areas of U.S.-Russian cooperation". The statement did not give any further details.

But it added that the conversation between the two took place in a "warm and constructive atmosphere" and covered fundamental questions regarding U.S.-Russian ties and their further development.

"Especially noted was the importance of cooperation between our two countries for international security and stability," the statement said. Russia has repeatedly said it is keen to get straight down to business with the United States, particularly on arms control, not least because of President George W. Bush's intention of pressing ahead with a National Missile Defence system which Moscow opposes.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin wrote to Bush congratulating him on his new job and setting out Moscow's views on how to improve bilateral relations.
