Flare Thrown on Court During Kournikova Match

MELBOURNE, Australia- Play was interrupted during an Australian Open doubles match feauturing Russian Anna Kournikova when a spectator threw a flare onto the court.

The orange flare was thrown from the stands on court one at Melbourne Park during a point in the first set of the match between Kournikova and her partner Barbara Schett of Austria against Japanese pair Shinobu Asagoe and Yuka Yoshida.

None of the players were hurt. The four looked at the flare when it landed near the net before a ballboy picked it up and took it away.

It was not immediately apparent who threw the flare or if anyone was detained.

Asagoe and Yoshida won the first set of the third round match against third seeds Kournikova and Schett 6-2.
