'Fire Sculptor' Dies After Apparently Setting Self Alight

TALLINN, Estonia - An Estonian artist known for using pyrotechnics in his artwork died after he poured gasoline over his body and set himself alight in front Tallinn's Art University, police said Friday.

Witnesses said they saw 26-year-old Lauri Tiidemann running down a street in the Baltic state's capital late Thursday engulfed in flames. Rescue services extinguished them, but the man was soon after pronounced dead, police spokesman Indrek Raudjalg said.

Just hours before his death, Tiidemann, along with several artists from Finland, had fashioned discarded Christmas trees into sculptures and set them on fire on a nearby beach.

A gasoline canister and a cigarette were found not far from the body.

"Signs point to this being a suicide, but we're not yet ruling out that it was an accident or even foul play," Raudjalg said.
