Earthquake Rattles Kuril Islands

HONG KONG — A magnitude 5.8 earthquake jolted the Kuril Islands off Russia's Pacific coast, the Hong Kong Observatory said early Thursday. No injuries or damage were immediately reported.

The quake hit at 0:55 a.m. local time in Kuril Islands on Thursday and was centered about 130 kilometers south of the town of Kurilsk.

The Kuril Islands are located along the "Ring of Fire," one of the world's most earthquake-prone regions.

The four southernmost Kurils are claimed by both Russia and Japan in a dispute that has prevented the countries from signing a treaty officially ending World War II.
