Zenit Fined, Warned

Premier league officials warned Zenit St. Petersburg on Thursday that it risked having its stadium closed following several violent clashes between rival fans and police this season.

The league ordered Zenit and CSKA Moscow to play their next home games behind closed doors in addition to handing Zenit a 10,000-ruble ($360) fine after its fans fought police during a Premier League match Aug. 18.

The match was marred by heavy fighting at both ends of the St. Petersburg stadium. Police were able to restore order only after calling in reinforcements equipped with riot gear.

Earlier this month, 49 Torpedo Moscow fans were arrested for throwing bottles at police before a league match against Zenit.

In April, a 15-year-old Zenit fan was killed after supporters armed with rocks, bottles and sticks clashed in the streets before Zenit’s match against Dynamo Moscow.
