Tikhonov to Rest

Veteran midfielder and captain Andrei Tikhonov has been dropped by Spartak Moscow, but a club spokesman dismissed media talk of a transfer.

“Tikhonov is psychologically very tired, he needs a break,” Spartak coach Oleg Romantsev told Sovietsky Sport newspaper. “How long this will last is difficult to say.”

A Spartak spokesman said it was up to the club’s doctors to decide when Tikhonov would rejoin the side.

“Unfortunately, we have to play to the end of the season without him,” the spokesman said. Asked if Tikhonov had been put on the transfer list, the spokesman said: “Absolutely not.”

Tikhonov, the club’s top scorer last season with 19 goals, has seen a dramatic decline in form in the current campaign, with only a single goal.

Tikhonov, who is training on his own at the moment, said he had a meeting with club officials last Friday.

“We decided together that I needed a bit of a break in appearances for the club,” he said.
