SYDNEY, Australia — Russia dominated the first day of finals in the Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling tournament at the Sydney Exhibition Center.

The 22-year-old bright young star of Russian wrestling, Varteres Samourgachev, earned Russia’s first gold medal of the competition in the 63-kilogram category.

European champion Samourgachev was in his first medal match in an international tournament, but he showed no signs of nerves as he outpointed Juan Luis Maren of Cuba in overtime.

Russia then added a second gold medal in the 76-kilogram category as Mourat Kardanov edged out American Matt James Linden 3-0.

The scores all came in a little flurry in the first period as Linden failed to escape from the Russian’s fierce gut wrench hold.
