Putin, Persson Meet

Russia’s strong ties with Sweden will help Moscow develop contacts with the European Union when Stockholm assumes that body’s rotating chairmanship next year, President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday.

In a Kremlin meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Goeran Persson, Putin praised Sweden as a strong economic partner, saying trade turnover had increased by 50 percent over the last year, Itar-Tass reported.

"We shall work to deepen and improve these relations," Persson said after the meeting, according to Itar-Tass.

Putin agreed to visit Sweden next year, Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said.
