Ostankino Damage Estimated at $40M

Repairing the damage from a fire last week at Moscow television tower Ostankino will cost at least 1.1 billion rubles ($40 million) and take at least a year, Russia’s top construction official said Tuesday.

Top priorities will be repairing elevators and the steel cables that support the 540-meter-tall Ostankino Tower, Anvar Shamuzafarov, chairman of the State Construction Committee, told a news conference.

Only 22 of the tower’s 149 cables remain undamaged after the fire, Shamuzafarov said.

A tender will be held among construction companies for replacing or restoring the cables, a project estimated to cost at least 45 million rubles ($1.6 million), Shamuzafarov said.

Fixing a passenger elevator and cargo lift and two smaller elevators will cost at least 300 million rubles ($10.8 million), he said, according to Russian news agencies.
