New Vimpelcom Boss

Moscow cellular operator Vimpelcom, which trades under the BeeLine brand, has made its chief operating officer, Jo Lunder, president of the company.

Lunder, 38, was chief operating officer of Telenor Mobile, the mobile subsidiary of Norwegian state-owned telephone company Telenor, which owns a 25.7 percent stake in Vimpelcom.

Dmitry Zimin, 67, the founder and majority shareholder of Vimpelcom, will retain his post as Vimpelcom’s CEO.

Vimpelcom has more than 650,000 subscribers and is locked in a battle with Mobile TeleSystems, or MTS, for market share.

Both companies are bracing for the arrival next year of Sonic Duo, which will be Moscow’s third operator using the European GSM standard. MTS and Vimpelcom are fighting a Communications Ministry move to strip them of some of their frequencies in favor of Sonic Duo.
