Lithuanian Suspect Dies

VILNIUS, Lithuania — Lithuanian war crimes suspect Aleksandras Lileikis has died of a heart attack at the age of 93, his lawyer said Wednesday.

Lileikis was charged with genocide for his role in the handing over of more than 70 Jews to Nazi executioners during the German occupation of Lithuania. He was the first person to face Nazi-era war crimes charges in a post-Soviet country.

“At the end of last week he was delivered to Antakalnis hospital but his health deteriorated and he was transported to Santariskes hospital where he died on Tuesday of a heart attack,” said Algirdas Matuiza, his lawyer.

Lileikis’ trial had proceeded fitfully since the case was first launched in mid-1997 because of his deteriorating health and was officially put on hold in July. He had denied the charges against him.
