Factory Fire in Siberia

  • A fire broke out Thursday after lightning hit a chemical factory in Siberia, killing one person and injuring three others, an official said.

The fire in Angarsk, near Irkutsk in eastern Siberia, began when lightning struck an outbuilding in the factory complex, said Victor Beltsov, a spokesman for the Emergency Situations Ministry.

It took more than 100 firefighters with 31 fire engines two hours to put out the fire. No toxic chemicals were released into the environment, Beltsov said.
