Club Leader Amnestied

  • Belarussian authorities have amnestied a Russian businessman who was sentenced to three years in jail for staging a violent exercise in a local village.

Anatoly Silivonchik, who led a group of 125 teenagers in storming the village of Nikolayevka in June 1999, has been released from a prison in the Belarussian city of Gomel, Interfax said Tuesday.

The teen members of the adventure and survival club, led by 10 former servicemen,` stormed into the village, beating the residents and holding them for hours in what Silivonchik still insists was a mere exercise.

Silivonchik, 42, was detained after the group tried to stage a similar attack on a nearby town. He was convicted of aggravated hooliganism.
