Azeri Party Barred

BAKU, Azerbaijan — Election officials in Azerbaijan on Monday barred the largest opposition party from November parliamentary elections, saying some of the signatures it collected were falsified.

Vidadi Makhmudov, a member of the Central Election Commission, said the Musavat Party had presented 56,000 signatures, more than the 50,000 needed to get on the ballot — but that about 7,000 were ruled to have been falsified.

About two-thirds of the members of the commission are members of the New Azerbaijan Party, which supports President Heidar Aliyev.
