Zenit Loses Out on UEFA Cup Place

ST. PETERSBURG — Celta Vigo struck twice in the last seven minutes to snatch a 2-2 draw at Zenit St. Petersburg in their Intertoto Cup final, second leg match Tuesday to reach the UEFA Cup 4-3 on aggregate.

South African striker Benni McCarthy scored a dramatic 88th-minute goal to level the scores on the night, giving the Spaniards an aggregate win.

McCarthy silenced the near capacity 21,000-strong home crowd when he beat goalkeeper Roman Berezovsky from close range on his second attempt after the Zenit keeper made an initial save.

Celta was trailing 2-0 after 63 minutes after two goals from Gennady Popovich and was facing elimination with just seven minutes to play when Russian international Valery Karpin surprised Berezovsky with a low shot that crept inside the far post.

UEFA Cup holder Galatasaray survived a late rally by St. Gallen of Switzerland to draw 2-2 and secure a place in the Champions League in an error-riddled game in Istanbul on Tuesday.

Galatasaray won the third qualifying round tie 4-3 on aggregate but had a nervy time at the finish after the Turkish champion’s Brazilian keeper Claudio Taffarel allowed Charles Amoah to poach the ball as he was bouncing it to bring the scores to 2-2.

With St. Gallen needing only another away goal to win, Galatasaray scrambled to hold on for the final minutes.

An own goal by Marc Zellweger had put the Turks 1-0 up after 22 minutes and Brazilian striker Jardel calmly stroked home a penalty after 28 minutes to make it 2-0.

But Ionel Gane scored a glancing header to pull one back two minutes later and the Swiss gained confidence as the second half progressed.
