Violence at Wedding

MOSCOW -- A grenade brandished by a serviceman exploded at a wedding in southern Russia over the weekend, injuring at least 16 people and triggering a security scare, news agencies reported Sunday.

RIA news agency quoted Alexander Larionov, a police colonel in the Stavropol district, as saying the grenade had been detonated by a soldier who had been ejected from the celebration for bad behavior.

Interfax said a sergeant wanting to impress other guests at the gathering had been showing off the grenade when it exploded at the wedding in the village of Kuskaya.

It said police had initially sent an elite group of officers to investigate the overnight explosion in the district, not far from Chechnya, where Russian forces have been battling Chechen separatists for 10 months.
