MOSCOW -- The general director of UNESCO met Monday with President Vladimir Putin and other officials to discuss helping renovate the Bolshoi Theater and other landmarks.

Koichiro Matsuura arrived in Moscow on Sunday, saying that discussions about the Bolshoi, as well as the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and the Russian State Library, would be key items on his agenda. He was to leave for St. Petersburg on Tuesday.

Speaking with Matsuura in the Kremlin, Putin said he hoped Russia's relations with UNESCO would expand. UNESCO planned to open an information center in Moscow later Monday.
