Ukraine Soil Poisened

KIEV — A total of 331 people, including 170 children, have been hospitalized after being poisoned by contaminated soil in southern Ukraine, said emergency officials Wednesday.

The first victims began arriving at a hospital from the southern Mykolaiv region Aug. 4, while others complained later in the month, said the Emergency Situations Ministry.

Seventy-seven people, including 64 children, were still undergoing treatment, said the ministry.

Health officials said the contamination apparently came from nitrates and nitrites in the soil and caused symptoms including rashes, drowsiness, loss of appetite and worsening of sight.
