Reactor Alarm Goes Off

An emergency alarm went off Tuesday at a nuclear power plant in northwest Russia, but no radiation leaks were reported, officials said.

Experts were trying to determine what set off the alarm at the No. 4 reactor of the Leningrad Nuclear Energy Station in Sosnovy Bor near St. Petersburg, a spokesman with the Nuclear Power Ministry said. The reactor was not in operation at the time.

The plant has four RBMK-1000 type reactors. The Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986 began when a RBMK-1000 type reactor malfunctioned during an experiment.
