More Seal Deaths

ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- Seals have started dying again en masse off Kazakhstan's Caspian Sea shores, two months after 10,000 of the mammals died of mysterious causes in the oil-rich region, a Kazakh official said Friday.

Turlan Mukashev, head of the ecological monitoring department of the Mangistau region, said 89 seal carcasses had been counted over the past week.

The May deaths caused an outcry in Kazakhstan, after allegations that oil-drilling projects in and around the Caspian may have played a role. Both the government and companies deny the deaths were caused by oil effluents.
