Kyrgyz Acquitted

ALMATY, Kazakhstan — A Kyrgyz opposition leader was acquitted Monday of abuse of office, setting the stage for him to stand against the country’s long-serving president in autumn elections.

Felix Kulov, 51, walked free from the military court after the verdict, his lawyer said. The case had drawn Western criticism and raised fears of a clampdown on the opposition.

Kulov was quoted by Interfax as saying he would need around a week to decide whether to stand against President Askar Akayev in an Oct. 29 election.
